Meaning half of all energy spent in a day is just done through chirping! It can make up to half of all the metabolic needs of an individual during the day. Singing is a very arduous process for a bird. For this reason, males will aggressively defend their borders from intruders. These sneaky birds can eventually overthrow the original resident, taking his resources and potential mates. If the bird can’t find this in their territory, then they will try to sneak into a neighbor’s to steal some. This is a pigment the birds have to acquire in their diet and cannot process themselves. ![]() When male birds are singing in the morning, they are pretty much standing on their front porch and yelling at their neighbors to stay off their lawns! Birds that have bright red plumage, like this Red-winged Blackbird, require carotenoids. The best way to do this is to secure a territory that houses shelter, food, water, and a low risk of predation. These displays require the male to access lots of high-quality resources to keep up his energy and appearance to stay attractive. Males then will have to come up with ornate and extravagant displays to impress females.
